Hello! Long time, no talk. I haven’t been writing, but boy have I been crocheting, and so now there is lots to talk about!
Back in May, my daughter was sick for two days (she has caught every germ possible this year). During this time, we watched The Lorax, not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES! It is a really great movie with fun music and a good message. Plus, you just want to give the Lorax a hug every time he’s on screen. The Unless quote comes from him (and Dr. Seuss), “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.”
A couple of weeks later I listened to this podcast by bhooked crochet. It was an interview with London Kaye, and she talked about her start with yarn bombing and how her career has grown from it.
I must have had these two things on my mind because when I woke up one morning, my very first public yarn bomb idea hit me.
I immediately recruited my daughter for help, and she started making Treffalu Trees from homemade pom poms and floral sticks.
I went to work on The Lorax, only my second amigurumi.
And of course we made an unless sign, and made a Thneed, for good measure.
We woke up early on a Saturday, and set everything up on and around an old tree that had to be cut down this year. The tree was one of the oldest in the city and during the farmer’s markets, in the summer, all the kids would try to climb it. It was very sad to see it go.
Here are some finished pictures of the yarn bomb. Another person made the wooden sign, we added around it.
When we went to the farmer’s market later, C was so excited to see people taking pictures and talking about “her art”.
Have you ever tried to yarn bomb? Where and what did you do? I’d love to hear about it!
Hope you all are doing well. Happy Crocheting!
Well, you two had fun! Did many people get the reference or did you have to explain it a gazillion times?

We did have fun! We mostly sat back and just watched people, so we didn’t have to explain it to anyone 😊

What a great project for the two of you! Glad to see your post, been wondering how you are with the new job, etc. I was betting it morphed into near mayhem, that’s the usual when a park & rec type place gets hold of someone like you!

Thanks Kathy! Mayhem is definitely the word for my job. I teach so many different classes and it takes so much time to plan for them, it’s been hard to keep up with the blog. I’m still here, though, and I try to catch up on all my blogging friends’ posts when I can!

Oh, how wonderful!. How proud Little C must have felt to see people admire her work. I’ve never had the courage to yarn bomb anything but perhaps one day…

You should get your students to make Pom poms and yarn bomb something in the school (get permission first 😉). My daughter was a pro at making the poms, although I did have to help tie them. Little C got a great kick out of the whole experience, it was really fun!

I haven’t seen the Lorax, but now I want to. I’m actually in the process of planning my first yarn bomb, but we shall see if I’m actually brave enough to go ahead with it!

You should definitely go ahead with it, it is very empowering! Listen to the podcast I linked to in my post, it’s so motivating! Can’t wait to see what you do!
