Just when I thought Fall was making it’s way into our lives, we get hit with 85 degree weather! I think I got a tan this weekend :). I am not deterred, though, I have gone cowl and ear warmer crazy, and am racking up the goods for next month’s craft fair. Check out a few of my items…
These cowls are a Lion Brand free pattern, you can find it here. I modified the pattern with a smaller hook and less stitches to make the headbands. The detachable flower pattern can be found on an earlier blog, you can read that here.
Other than that, I am going to be teaching crochet through our local recreation department. It doesn’t start until next year, but I am very excited to add teaching to my crochet resume! When I met with the gentleman who runs the programs he asked if I wanted to take over an art class for 5-8 year olds. Ummm, okay! So, now I’m an art teacher too. It is only one hour a week and will hopefully be fun for the kids, of course I am going to add some string art to the group too!
So things are looking up for me on the job front. Have you ever done any teaching? Any, helpful tips?

Make sure that you can crochet with your right AND left hand! I had a leftie in my class once and I felt a little bad trying to figure out how to reverse everything on the spot.

5-8 year olds….think in 10 minute increments, and plan 3 more increments than you think you will need. The Do-Reflect-Apply triangle is a good way to make sure there’s a take home message for the day. MAybe check with the local 4-H office to see if they have some of the national art curriculum you could look at? Seems like there is one for 5-8 year olds, and those are nicely laid out. Love those crafty goodies!!

I like this time of year – the days can still be very warm but the evenings are cooler so just right to spread an ‘in progress’ crochet blanket over your legs.
Lovely little headbands and cowls – you are making them in such pretty colours.
I have no tips for teaching methods but I think you’ll find the hour will fly by.

Is it sad that when we finally hit 89 degrees I was jumping for joy? I was running around commenting on how cool it was. When we hit 78 degrees for a few days I was over the moon. We’re back to the 90’s but at least we’re moving in the right direction. 🙂 Super excited about hearing how the teaching gig goes. I keep saying I’m going teach at the community and rec center and still haven’t done it so good for you!

We’ve been in the high 80’s all week, so you’d love Wisconsin right now! I don’t start the crochet gig till January, but I did start the art class for 5-8 year olds last week. I think the kids had fun and were interested in the project. I came home exhausted and with a new appreciation for people who work with kids all day!
