Remember my Oddly Satisfying 3 Weeks when I worked diligently on my Modern Irish Crochet Top? I’m still not done. To be fair, I’m waiting for my husband to help me with a duck tape dress form. We haven’t gotten around to making one and I don’t want to finish the top unless I know it fits. Still, I haven’t forgotten about modern Irish crochet, in fact, I’m more determined than ever to practice the netting. That is where the idea for the outdoor lantern came from.
Materials:
Pickle Jar – emptied and cleaned with labels removed
Graph Paper
board (cork, styrofoam, etc.)
Pins
Cotton Yarn – size 3, various colors
Cotton Thread – size 10, black or the color of your choice
F Hook
1.65mm Hook
Scissors and Needle for finishing
Instructions:
Cut graph paper so that is wraps around the jar. Pin it to the board.
Using the size 3 yarn, make multiple circles in various sizes, and foundation single crochet a top boarder strip that will fit around the top of the jar.
Pin the boarder and circles to the graph paper. The wrong side should be facing up (this is the back of the piece.
With the size 10 thread and 1.65mm hook, use the chain stitch to create the netting between the circles, the circles will act as anchors. You may need to cut your thread and start in a different position at times.
When netting is complete, block the piece.
Tie the boarder around the jar, sew in the ends.
With the size 10 thread, and your 1.65 hook, finish the netting while piece is on the jar. Sew in the ends.
Ta Da! You lantern is complete, and will give off a beautiful glow at night!
I’m so happy with this project. I can’t wait to make more and set them around my patio. Do you think you’ll give this a try? I’d love to hear about your experience, and let me know if you have questions on the netting!
Happy Crocheting!
*gasps* It’s so pretty! It indeed will cast beautiful shadows at night.

Thanks! The netting takes time, that’s why I’m doing smaller projects for practice. I am getting faster!

So pretty!!! I would love to see a bunch of them lit up at night!!! I need to make some of these for my porch and get some solar powered outdoor lights to stick in them. 😀

There are mason jars that have lids with the solar lights in them – but I’ve got a ton of empty jars here that could be upcycled!! 😀

What a great way to practice! I helped my sister make her duct tape dress form last year, it is a great tool to have; just make sure you do it on a cool day, she was really warm by the time we finished.

Ha! Thanks for the advice 😊. I feel like I’m getting a little better and faster at the netting, and it’s always fun to finish a project!
