Last night my family and I went to carve pumpkins at our neighborhood pumpkin festival. It was a beautiful autumn evening, and before our friends and family arrived my husband, daughter and I spent an hour (props to the hubs for going an hour earlier) gutting the pumpkins and helping out where we were needed. The adults earned a pumpkin beer after all that work, and Little C earned herself a carved pumpkin!
One of my favorite parts of the evening was giving my daughter’s friend (who’s a boy) a scarf for his Halloween costume. He is trick-or-treating this year as Harry Potter, so of course I needed to make him a Gryffindor scarf!
Here’s a pic, in case you forgot what it looks like…
Okay, to be honest, there are at least two kinds of scarves that Harry wears in the movies. I chose this design because I was running low on gold, plus I think it is flashier than the color block version. Here is the pattern.
Materials:
N Hook
Loops and Threads Charisma 1 skein each of Red and Gold
Needle
Gryffindor Scarf
Foundation Row: (with red or burgundy): FHDC 12 times, ch 2 turn
Row 1-11: Extended Half Double Crochet in each FHDC, pull gold yarn through the last loop of the the EHDC, ch 2 turn
Row 12: EHDC across, carrying and crocheting over the red yarn, pull red yarn through last loop of the EHDC, ch 2 turn
Row 13: EHDC across, carrying and crocheting over the yellow yarn, pull yellow yarn through the last loop of the EHDC, ch 2 turn
Row 14: EHDC across, carrying and crocheting over the red yarn, pull red yarn through the last loop of the EHDC, ch 2 turn
Rows 15 – 26: EHDC across, ch 2 turn. Last Row Only, pull gold yarn through last loop of the EHDC, ch 2 turn.
[Repeat Rows 12 -26] 3 times
Join gold to one end, EHDC across. Repeat on other end.
Bind off and sew in ends
*Notes: I chose an extended half double crochet because I liked the bulk and warmth of a hdc, but I wanted longer stitches for drape.
Living in the Midwest, you never know what the weather will be like when trick-or-treating. This crochet scarf will keep a “Harry Potter” warm while he/she collects all sorts of sweet treats!
Happy Crocheting!
